💡 Tsuki Tribune Rating: 9/10
The JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise has never been afraid to do things differently, but Steel Ball Run takes that creative spirit in an exciting new direction. Set in an alternate version of 19th-century America, the series combines horse racing, supernatural abilities, dangerous rivals, and the unmistakable personality that has made JoJo one of anime's most recognizable franchises.
Based on Hirohiko Araki's seventh manga part, the adaptation follows Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli as they enter a massive cross-country horse race with a prize of $50 million.
After its opening stage and subsequent episodes, Steel Ball Run has established itself as one of the most distinctive anime experiences of 2026.
Story: A Race That Becomes Something Much Bigger
The story begins with Johnny Joestar, a former horse-racing prodigy whose life changes after an accident leaves him unable to walk.
His meeting with Gyro Zeppeli introduces him to a mysterious technique involving steel balls, leading Johnny to discover the possibility of a different future.
The two eventually become partners in the Steel Ball Run race, a dangerous competition stretching across North America.
What makes the premise interesting is how the race gradually becomes more than a sporting event. The competitors encounter strange locations, mysterious powers, dangerous opponents, and secrets that transform the journey into an unpredictable adventure.
Characters: Johnny and Gyro Make a Great Team
Johnny is a fascinating protagonist because his journey is not simply about becoming stronger. He begins as a deeply frustrated person searching for a reason to move forward.
Gyro provides an excellent contrast. His confident personality, unusual sense of humor, and mysterious background make him an entertaining partner.
Their relationship is one of the strongest elements of the adaptation. Their conversations and disagreements create memorable moments while gradually developing their partnership.
The supporting characters also help make the race feel like a world filled with unpredictable personalities rather than a simple competition between heroes and villains.
Animation and Visual Direction
One of the biggest attractions of Steel Ball Run is its visual identity.
The Western landscapes, horse-racing sequences, character designs, and dramatic supernatural moments give the anime a distinctive atmosphere.
The adaptation also benefits from its unusual setting. Instead of relying on familiar fantasy cities or modern Japanese locations, the series uses wide landscapes and dangerous frontier environments to create a different kind of adventure.
The action scenes are especially enjoyable when the mysterious powers of the competitors become part of the race itself.
Music and Atmosphere
The soundtrack supports the Western-inspired setting while maintaining the dramatic personality expected from JoJo.
The series moves between tense confrontations, unusual comedy, and moments of emotional character development.
Some musical choices may divide longtime fans, but the overall presentation helps the series establish its own identity.
What Could Be Better?
The unusual storytelling and large collection of characters may take time to understand, particularly for viewers unfamiliar with JoJo's style.
Some moments also move quickly between comedy and serious drama. That contrast is part of the franchise's personality, but it may not appeal to everyone.
Nevertheless, these qualities are also what make the series memorable.
Final Verdict: Is Steel Ball Run Worth Watching?
Absolutely. Steel Ball Run: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure delivers an exciting combination of adventure, supernatural action, memorable characters, and an unusual setting.
Johnny and Gyro's partnership gives the story an emotional center, while the dangerous race provides plenty of opportunities for surprising developments.
For longtime JoJo fans, it is a fresh chapter in a beloved franchise. For newcomers, it offers a new setting and cast that can make the adventure approachable without requiring knowledge of every previous JoJo storyline.
